I'm a Teacher Because...

Recently, there has been a surplus of blog posts and articles detailing how hard it is to be a teacher. It's true, it's hard and it seems that no one is on our side. However, there's a reason we all became teachers. There's a reason that we all are still teaching.

I'm a teacher because of the moment when you see a light bulb go off above a students' head and that student feels the need to yell "BOOYA" at the top of his lungs.

I'm a teacher because I couldn't decide between being a nurse, social worker, psychologist, parent, comedian, or a police officer, so I became them all.

I'm a teacher because I want to be a lifelong learner. Kids ask the hardest questions and will challenge you to find the answers!

I'm a teacher because my coworkers are the best support system in the world!

I'm a teacher because laughter is the best medicine. I can't go a day without laughing at something ridiculous.

I'm a teacher because hugs and high fives can solve any problem. We celebrate "High Five or Hug Friday" and every student must give me one or the other. The boys all started the year with only giving me a high five. Slowly but surely, each one on their own started giving me a hug. Now I get high fives AND hugs from 22 students every Friday. This is in addition to the hugs that I give to stop tears, the hugs that students give to apologize, the hugs that we give to congratulate or say hello.

I'm a teacher because everyday is a new start and you never know what you're going to get.

I'm a teacher because if I don't care, who will? Students come to us fighting every label that could possibly be placed on them. Homeless, abused, learning disabled, behavior problem, single parent, foster child, lapse in schooling, sick, emotional disorder, injured, adopted, the list goes on. Somebody has to fight for them.

I'm a teacher because no matter what others say, I MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

So, all you crazy people out there who still choose to be teachers, why are you a teacher?
